Introduction to the use of chelating agents

In the chemical industry and industrial production process, adding chelating agents to make metal ions generate chelates with completely different properties is the main method to reduce and control the concentration of metal ions.

Chelates are widely used in mineral flotation processes, hydrometallurgy, extraction and separation of metal elements, catalytic synthesis of substances, water softening, electroplating processes, pharmaceutical industry, dyeing processes, etc.

Chelates are widely used in chemical, mechanical and deinking pulp bleaching with hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorous acid as bleaching agents. Some chelating agents can be used in medicine for the treatment of lead and mercury poisoning. The specific uses are as follows:

1. It can effectively inhibit the catalytic decomposition of metal ions caused by hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorous acid bleaching agents, improve bleaching efficiency, save bleaching liquid, and reduce bleaching costs.

2. It has a strong capture ability and dispersion effect on Fe3+ ions, avoiding the reaction of Fe3+ ions with phenolic groups in pulp to form dark-colored complexes, protecting fibers, improving pulp whiteness, and reducing pulp yellowing.

3. It can effectively prevent calcium, magnesium and other metal ions from chemically reacting to form precipitates during pulp bleaching, thereby preventing scaling of system equipment and pipelines, and can gradually remove the original scaling of the rinsing system.

4. It has a certain dispersing ability and can improve the dispersibility of sodium silicate.

5. It protects pulp fibers and prevents the damage of NaOH peeling reaction to fibers.

6. Compared with traditional DTPA, it has a good cost-effectiveness.

7. It is used for separation and purification of metal elements, dyeing of fabrics, and manufacture of organic pigments, etc.
